Eleanor & Park [2012]

Eleanor and parkAuthor: Rainbow Rowell
Year: 2012
Publisher: Orion

About (bookbrowse):

Bono met his wife in high school, Park says.
So did Jerry Lee Lewis, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be, she says, we’re 16.
What about Romeo and Juliet? Shallow, confused, then dead.
I love you, Park says.
Wherefore art thou, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be.

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits – smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love – and just how hard it pulled you under.

I Say…

I know. I am not the only one. Not in here. The whole world loves Eleanor and Park now. OK. This is my second time to read the book and I don’t want to visit Goodreads again to glance at the ratings. It’s my turn rating it. It’s far from OK. It’s more than inviting, like coffee when you pass by an open door of Starbucks… that moment makes me always want to buy myself some coffee. This book gave me the same effect.

The book was set in 1986, where people play Walkman and use AA batteries, and use mix tapes? It was the era of very good music. No wonder Park got into Eleanor’s system that easy. Who doesn’t love the 80’s by the way? A lot of things evolved because of what happened during the 80’s. Hairstyles. Music. Dating. Name it.

I wanted to highlight a lot of phrases in my copy of the book, but never mind. I’ll remember them anyway. Park sure knows how to say the words at the right moment…Rainbow Rowell nailed it! It sucks you in and spits you out shortly afterwards. It’s like reading poetry and comics at the same time. I don’t know how to actually explain it, but it felt good. Painful, but really, really good. First love is painful. But it’s good. There’s always something there to remind you about it, FOR SURE. It will haunt you, no matter how long it has been… or how good or bad it went. It will always be there within you. I think Rainbow Rowell made that very clear in her book.

I hate putting up spoilers here, so you just might want to check it out. Rainbow Rowell will make it big a few more years from now.
