I remember Julie Anne San Jose as a Pop Star Kids contender when QTV11 was at its prime. She is indeed tailor made to become a pop star. Her self-titled album is the harbinger of growth in the music industry.

Even without filler revivals of Hold On and Let Me Be The One, her album is the total pop album. Her acoustic and all original Baby U Are is the opening track and became an instant favorite, bearing the authentic Julie Anne sound. Another favorite will have to be one of her carrier singles titled Enough, with a very nice vibe and kickass meaning. A lot of her songs might be familiar, as they turned into Heart of Asia themes like I’ll Be There (Lie To Me), Bakit Ngayon (The Greatest Love) and For Everything (My Daughter Seoyeong).

Her songs are about relationships and unrequited love, making it more appealing to listeners young or the young at heart. Her album is highly recommended to those who are really into pop music.

I Say…

Finally, after failed attempts to find a copy for about 4 months now, I already got my copy of The Meaning of Happy CD. i don’t know why they won’t replenish stocks when they’re well aware that the racks are empty of Same Same.’s CDs.The only thing I could think of was that there were not enough album sales that they decided not to replenish, but any sales person could’ve explained they’ve been pulled out. But all these record shops I’ve visited and asked only told me they’re out of stock. Out of stock might mean two things: They won’t order for more or they’ve been ordering but it’s still not coming in. I don’t think it’d be good for their business if they keep answering that some CDs are out of stock. It means losing potential buyers, and it will surely lead to an impression that they’re not capable of providing for their customers’ needs.

Anyway, enough lecture on the cost of quality! Thank God I was able to get the CD locally hence, I’ll really use my Mom’s credit card and order one from Tower.com! Now I wouldn’t have to settle for mp3 samples! Yey!

Let me do my review 1, 2 or 3 songs at a time… it’s just that I have so much to say about it that way rather than collectively. Excuse me for my being excited , this review has been suspended four months!

Supermodel: Catchy…very catchy! I used to skip this track but now I’ve been listening to it more than I’ve been listening to other songs in the album. I can’t imagine this being a Hidell song… or maybe it could’ve sounded a lot differently if it were. I’m curious. =)

Citylights & The Meaning of Happy: Not a favorite, but I’m not skipping on it. It’s two of the many songs from the album I’m still pondering on up until now. I think that the sound’s something 80-ish… if you got what I mean.

Without You: This, for me, is the cutest song in the album. Frankly though, I prefer the one with Jacklyn Victor singing. Just..don’t ask. I like that version better. If I’m not mistaken, it became a movie theme… and I am so sure that movie’s really “kilig”! This love at first sight song really leaves “that” kind of feeling.

Downtown, I’m Still In Love With You & I Waited Too Long: I simply felt the Beatles’ influence in them, most especially for I’m Still In Love With You. If the Beatles were still alive ’til now I think they’d sound like Same Same if they sing these songs. Teehee! Way to go, Clint & Bob!

Love Isn’t: Simply put, it’s a “reality bites” song. Every time I listen to it, I can feel it talking to me. I love it. I just like what it’s trying to tell me & I believe the same thing. =)

Strange Lover: This is Clint’s [& also Bob’s as he tells it!] favorite song from the album. This is Same Same, adapting the Asian sound. The first time I listened to it, I was really paying attention to the lyrics, because of the intriguing title. Check out Farang Ja [it’s Thai version] and the video… it’s very “makulit”!

Hearts Collide, Stay & Tell Me: More love songs from The Meaning of Happy album! Here’s Clint & Bob pouring their hearts out, something they’re really good at. I couldn’t help but think how many heartbreaks could’ve possibly occurred during the time of their absence… because they’re really very sad! These three songs are not very difficult to relate to, if you’d ask me,

The Meaning of Happy as a whole: OK, I don’t want to sound biased if I say that it’s a good album… but it really is. You just have to listen to it as a whole, because it will be hard to capture the sense if you skip on tracks. This isn’t anything like their previous projects, so you’re definitely in for something different this time. Plus, it’s just Clint & Bob; not Clint & Bob from The Moffatts. It’s Clint & Bob Moffatt this time around.

Review: Mocca–My Diary (2002)

Track list:My Diary

01. Once Upon a Time, Secret Admirer
02. Twist Me Around
03. What If
04 Me & My Boyfriend
05. Telephone
06 Dream
07. When The Moonlight Shines
08. …And Rain Will Fall
09. Life Keeps On Turning
10. What If [acoustic]
11. Me & My Boyfriend [acoustic]

I first heard about Mocca about 2 summers ago. I was talking then to one of the members of the band Omelet Parade, inquiring about the auditions for the post of vocalist/guitarist. But fortunately, I passed my summer class and I just have to concentrate on my studies from that point on. Anyhow, he asked me if I know the band Mocca, because it’s their main influence, and they’re like, trying to adapt the Indie Pop genre. I searched for it but I couldn’t find anything except for the information about them being Indonesian and the Indie pop genre.

So when i stumbled upon the albums [thanks to my online buddy Ashran], I was surprised that the songs from their albums are in English! So, there’s no language barrier between me and Mocca’s songs, since I can understand English perfectly well. My Diary is a girl’s album. All the songs were based from a girl’s feelings and experiences. It’s like an actual diary… just imagine listening to a singing diary entry!

One word to describe it? CUTE. The words are not figurative or anything, that is why it’s more of listening to a person’s experience or story for the day in a casual manner….knowing what runs in the mind of a girl who’s lonely while waiting for love to arrive, or how her boyfriend treats her. Everything was beautifully taken from a girl’s point of view.

The album is 80% Bossa… and Bossa makes me sleepy. But since Mocca’s lyrics are funny and highly entertaining, I tried my best to stay up and not to sleep through the entire album while I’m writing this review.

I am recommending this albums to hopeless romantic girls out there!

Review: Marit Larsen – Under The Surface [2006]

Track Listing:
01. In Came The Light
02. Under The Surface
03. Don’t Save Me
04. Only A Fool
05. Solid Ground
06. This Time Tomorrow
07. Recent Illusion
08. The Sinking Game
09. To An End
10. Come Closer
11. Poison Passion

I Say…

Do you still remember M2M‘s cute, little blond girl who used to play the guitar? That’s her. Last year, her solo album was released entitled Under the Surface.

Maybe it was destiny for M2M to split, so that individually they can create more interesting songs. And honestly, I think that Marit Larsen sounded better on her own. Her songs sound more mature now, even though you can’t really take off that teeny bopper sound. It must be inborn.

Still very much into the pop genre, her Under the Surface album is as nice as M2M’s The Big Room. The songs are full of humor, especially Don’t Save Me and Only A Fool. This is really a girl’s album, reflecting girls’ feelings of being in a serious relationship with a person she truly loves, making sure that she’s the only one in his heart.

All in all the album is not disappointing. If you’re in a good mood to listen to some pop music, try listening to Marit’s album, and measure how much she has grown since her M2M days.

Review: Girl Next Door by Saving Jane

Small town homecoming queen
She’s a star in this scene
There’s no way to deny she’s lovely
Perfect skin, perfect hair
Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she’s ugly

Maybe I’m just jealous-I can’t help but hate her
Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her

She is the prom queen, I’m in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I’m sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk, I’m sleeping on the floor
She’s Miss America
And I’m just the girl next door

Senior class president
She must be heaven sent
She was never the last one standing
A backseat debutante
Everything that you want
Never too harsh or too demanding

Maybe I’ll admit it, I’m a little bitter
Everybody loves her, but I just wanna hit her…

I don’t know why I’m feeling sorry for myself
Spend all my time wishing that I was someone else

I get a little bit, she gets a little more
She’s Miss America
And I’m just the girl next door

****** Talk about insecurity, yeah! This song actually moved up the charts of Jam 88.3, and with the dj’s opinion it’s because many girls can relate to it. Hey, all of us have different special traits! We are unique on our own declaration! (Hell, yeah we do…) But in real life this kind of thing happens… there’s always someone better than us, and that… we have to accept, right? But it’s never too late to improve and show to the world that we can make a difference… and not just hide under the shadow of those girls whom we think are perfect. They’re not. They just happened to be, well… noticed. Each star in the universe shine. Some maybe too bright but, the other stars shine too. It’s just that their time to shine their brightest hasn’t come. Wishing that were someone else doesn’t make us appreciate who we really are. So let’s take time to know ourselves better and love it!
